Dr. Ronald Schonwetter

Dr. Ronald Schonwetter, MD, FACP, AGSF, FAAHPM was named Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of Chapters Health System in 2005. Dr. Schonwetter began working with Chapters Health System in 1989 when it was formerly known as Hospice of Hillsborough.

With over 30 years of experience in the medical field, Dr. Schonwetter is a renowned specialist in hospice and palliative medicine in the Tampa area. Dr. Schonwetter has dedicated his career to providing accessible care for patients as they face the challenges of advancing age or illness.

At Chapters Health System, Dr. Schonwetter oversees the medical and clinical services departments, pharmacy, and research department. His commitment to maximizing quality of life for all patients can be seen through the impacts of his work over the years.

Dr. Schonwetter developed and launched the palliative medicine program which expanded Chapters Health’s mission and increased patient access to care throughout the last years of life, serving a new sector of patients.

A graduate of the University of South Florida’s College of Medicine, Dr. Schonwetter completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, as well as a two-year fellowship in geriatric medicine at Baylor and The Veterans Administration Medical Center. Dr. Schonwetter taught at his alma mater, USF, and spearheaded the division of Geriatric Medicine and its fellowship program at the College of Medicine.

Dr. Schonwetter is certified in internal medicine, hospice and palliative medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine, and is also certified as a hospice medical director.

As an industry leader, Dr. Schonwetter has served as Chairman of the Board for the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine and was elected President of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine in 2006.
