Care for Patients with Cancer

We offer coordinated, comprehensive care for patients with all forms of cancer, including leukemia, breast cancer, lung cancer and prostate cancer.

Care for Patients with Cancer
With the advent and increase in usage of Pap tests, the cervical cancer death rate decreased dramatically due to much earlier diagnoses.

Every cancer patient experiences his or her disease differently. We provide care and support to cancer patients after they’ve received a diagnosis, helping them navigate between levels of care depending on the disease’s path.

Palliative medicine doesn’t treat cancer, but it helps with pain and symptom management. Hospice care can benefit people with end-stage cancer by helping to ensure they experience the best possible quality of life.

At Chapters Health System, we recognize the unique needs of patients with all kinds of cancer. Our services can help in the following ways:

  • Overall management of a patient’s illness
  • Assistance with complex medical decision making
  • Guidance in transitioning between levels of care
  • Pain and symptom management and/or reduction
  • Emotional and spiritual support
  • Secure monitoring via telehealth options

Open Access: Improving Quality of Life for Hospice Patients

When faced with a choice between hospice and aggressive treatment, most patients delay admission to hospice and wait until the last few weeks, or even days, of life. Chapters Health System is committed to offering the Open Access therapeutic approach so patients don’t have to choose between receiving hospice services that help improve their quality of life or palliative therapies that bring them comfort and extend their prognosis.

At Chapters Health, we support the continuation of Open Access and palliative therapies such as:

  • Radiation and chemotherapy, which can assist in decreasing pain and symptoms associated with a cancer diagnosis.
  • Blood transfusions, which can boost patients’ blood volumes to help avoid fatigue and shortness of breath.
  • Artificial nutrition or hydration (e.g., feeding tube), which is helpful to patients with esophageal or colon cancer who cannot get or tolerate adequate nutrition by mouth.
  • Cardiac infusions, which can help maintain heart function and treat shortness of breath, fatigue and weakness.

With a coordinated and multidisciplinary approach, Open Access offers patients and families:

  • Options that can be customized for each patient’s individual plan of care
  • More effective symptom and pain control
  • Decreased in re-hospitalizations and fewer days in intensive-care units
  • Improved quality of life and patient mood

In a study published in the American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, the authors state that the Open Access approach gives patients the medical comfort and social support traditionally available through hospice care while, at the same time, letting them receive sophisticated medical treatments that may slow their disease.
